What is Acupuncture?
For over 5000 years, people in the Orient have relied upon Traditional Oriental Medicine as their primary healing system. In recent years, this time-honored healing art has gained wide acceptance all over the world as a powerful complement to conventional modern medicine. Acupuncture in particular has become a popular choice for millions of Americans seeking a safe, holistic, and natural alternative to conventional drug therapy and surgery.
Acupuncture is
safe because the needles are single-use and sterilized and because it is performed by licensed, medically trained specialists. It is holistic because it is based upon the understanding of the body as a connected web, both physical and mental. It is natural because it stimulates the body's own response to imbalance and disease. Acupuncture is relaxing and enjoyable; most of our patients find their treatments very pleasant and energizing.
How does Acupuncture Work?
There is vital force energy that courses through our body. The ancient Chinese called it "Qi" (pronounced "chee"). Qi is stimulated in the body through channels called "meridians" that connect hundreds of acupuncture points. These points have specific and powerful effects on the energetic properties of organ systems, bodily functions, the mind and spirit.
By the gentle insertion of ultra-fine, sterilized needles, a skilled acupuncturist directs the flow of "qi" to strengthen the body's immunity, organ systems, blood and nervous system, to facilitate healing. Modern research has confirmed that acupuncture has a strong effect on stimulating endorphins, serotonin, cortisol, ACTH and other powerful chemicals that our body naturally produces to heal disease and maintain well-being. Occasionally you may experience a slight prick or achy sensation. Any discomfort is usually very temporary and your practitioner can adjust the treatment to match your tolerance level.
There are several well-known traditions of acupuncture. This is because acupuncture has been developed through the years in China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries before becoming popular in Europe and the United States. The styles of acupuncture most often utilized in our practice are Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, Ear Acupuncture, Laser and Electro-Acupuncture. As adjunctive therapies, we utilize Moxibustion (infra-red heat therapy), Qi Gong (energetic body work therapy), Tui Na (TCM medical massage),Gwa Sha and Cupping.
What does Acupuncture Treat?
Acupuncture is best known as a natural and powerful treatment for acute and chronic pain. People with conditions ranging from headaches to sciatica to arthritis usually respond very favorably to acupuncture.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has compiled a list of symptoms, diseases and conditions which, through clinical trials, has been shown to be treated effectively by acupuncture. Below is a part of this list:
- Pain

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments will vary depending on the duration, severity and possible cause of your condition. Some acute conditions may require only one treatment while chronic conditions may require a series of five to fifteen treatments. Degenerative conditions may need many treatments over a period of time. The patient's constitutional health and how receptive the patient is to suggested dietary and lifestyle changes also play a major role in the healing process.
Is There Anything I Must Do Prior to Treatment?
Before a treatment it is suggested that you eat something light, not a full meal. Don't schedule a treatment when excessively fatigued, hungry, upset or after drinking alcohol.
What Can I Expect After My First Treatment?
Some people may feel immediate relief and some may feel their symptoms are only slightly diminished. In some cases, symptomology may be exacerbated only to notice the symptoms greatly diminish over the next day or two. Many people have reported a better night's rest and their ability to handle stress have greatly improved.
